If you want to keep your guitar in the best possible condition, just like everything else regular guitar maintenance will go a long way to ensuring that your guitar gives you only the very best sounds that you want to hear.  You take pride in other valuable things that you own and clean them regularly, and you should look after your guitar in exactly the same way.

If you to help your guitar to deliver a great sound for you, with no distortion at all, helping you to get exactly the right tones from said guitar, then regular cleaning is very important.

To begin with the basics of your guitar cleaning schedule, you should get into the habit of simply using a soft duster to wipe down the guitar body and neck. Be careful not to use this on the strings themselves as, depending on your guitar strings, this will affect the quality of sound that you are after, as this again could leave residues of the duster / cloth on your actual guitar strings.

It might sound a little pedantic but you should wash your hands and dry them properly before using your guitar. This is because over a period of time your fingers may burnish the guitar strings causing them to lose their shine. If you really want to care for your guitar instrument fanatically, again to give you hopefully many years of guitar playing pleasure, you’ll want to pay attention to these small but nevertheless important small details.

If they are not available locally, you can buy guitar maintenance kits cheaply and easily on eBay. One manufacturer is the Dunlop guitar maintenance kit which has everything needed to keep your guitar instrument in perfect condition within the kit.

When to Change Guitar Strings

As time goes on you may notice that your guitar strings are starting to sound just ever so slightly ‘dull’. Or, of course, because of normal usage, they may just be showing signs of general wear and tear. As you may need them at any time, it’s always a good idea to keep a set of at least one set of spare guitar strings nearby.

There really is nothing worse than one of your guitar strings snapping when you are jamming with friends and getting an awesome good guitar riff going. You may never find that awesome guitar sound again, if you haven’t anything to instantly replace it with.

So that won’t happen to you, always carry a spare set of guitar strings with you wherever you go. You won’t go far wrong if you keep them in your guitar storage case.

Depending on how often you play the guitar, as a rule of thumb, about every one to three months you may want to think about changing guitar strings.  You’ll need to do this less frequently if you get into the regular habit of cleaning and looking after your guitar regularly, after every guitar jam session.

You’ll find that guitar care really does pay for itself, not only in terms of ongoing guitar maintenance costs, but also especially concerning the amount of pleasure you’ll get from your own guitar playing.

How will look after your guitar when you are not playing it or practicing new guitar chords? That has to be one of the highest priorities for you to consider.

You’re ok if your new guitar came with a case for it. If not, think about buying a guitar case as soon as possible.  You can simply look in your local paper or buy cost effective guitar cases on eBay.  Even easier, you can ask around your family and friends to see if they have an old guitar case they can give you.

Your guitar case will protect it from the general knocks and bangs that can be expected from every day use of your guitar.  However it is important that you ensure that it fits your guitar properly, especially if you plan on taking it travelling with you.

It is actually a sound investment, as the guitar case is insuring you not only on the financial outlay of your guitar but also helps you to cherish your guitar playing skills as you build up an emotional attachment to your guitar. We know that everyone loves their first guitar. So keeping your guitar in the best first rate condition as possible has to be a number one priority.

You may also want to consider buying a guitar stand. If you plan on playing your guitar quite regularly, a guitar stand is a great guitar care idea. This works especially well if you don’t want to have to keep on taking it out of and putting it back in your guitar case.

It must be very obvious that it is best to keep your guitar out of strong sunlight or places where it can get very warm.  It’s a good idea to keep your guitar in the shade or at a reasonable room temperature. As well as being good for your guitar strings, this will prevent the materials used in your guitar’s construction from becoming warped, drying out, becoming brittle or even cracking.

In addition you should try your best to avoid extreme temperature changes. For example do not keep your guitar in your car overnight in freezing temperatures or for protracted periods anywhere, and then remove it from that environment into a room that is well heated.  Such an action will really affect the tonal quality of your guitar, and that is something that you want to avoid at all costs.

If you follow these few tips alone, they will help to keep your guitar in pristine condition, and this will ensure you years of guitar playing pleasure!
